Across Australia, Master’s and PhD students with disability are pushing the boundaries, but many face financial challenges and systemic barriers that existing scholarships don’t address.

A recent Universities Australia report warns of a ‘PhD poverty crisis’. Domestic PhD enrolments have decreased by 8% over the past five years, with average stipends sitting at just $33, 511 a year which is below the poverty line for a single person.

Informed by consultations with research students with disability, the NDRP Disability Research Leadership Program is designed to address these barriers and support the next generation of disability research leaders.

Up to eight PhD and Master’s by Research scholars participating in a new one year program will receive:

  • 15,000 in financial support to help them focus on their research and career development

  • Up to $15,000 in flexible funding for research and professional development activities like conference travel, collaborations with disability organisations, accessibility improvements and knowledge mobilisation.

Scholars will also join a national community of practice, connecting with peer researchers, disability leaders, and sector experts who share their commitment to disability-led research.

“Through consultations with current and former research students with disability, we heard repeatedly about financial barriers, lack of flexible support, and the need for peer networks,” says NDRP CEO Mary Sayers.

This program recognises and supports their expertise, opens doors to new opportunities, and connects them with a community of disability research leaders who will shape the evidence base that informs policy and practice.

Applications close 3 December 2025, 5:00pm AEDT.
